Effective Twitter backgrounds

The Graphic Mac was one of the many Twitter users featured over at Smashing Magazine this past week in their article Effective Twitter Backgrounds. The article discusses different ways you can brand yourself, your company or your product on Twitter via the use of the background image customization on your Twitter page.

While many users have long since moved on to dedicated Twitter applications on their desktop, many still make an effort to visit a user's Twitter page just to read up on their recent postings and check out their graphics and bio information; so it's still important that you customize your page.

The article certainly offers quite a bit of inspiration if you're looking to redesign your Twitter page, and I was pleasantly surprised to see The Graphic Mac listed!

Comment approvals

I'm sorry for the inconvenience this may cause, but I've more or less been forced to temporarily turn off full commenting on articles here at The Graphic Mac. You can still leave comments, but I'll have to approve them before they get posted to the site.

This is due to an obscene amount of spam getting through lately, and I just don't have the time to go surfing through every article to find them. Having them in an approval queue will make it much easier. Hopefully, the offending spam bots will go away soon and I can return full commenting back on as soon as possible.

If you follow The Graphic Mac on Twitter, I would like to say thanks so much for doing so. I hope you find at least some value in the links and information I post on Twitter that I don't post here on the site. And to those who really expected me to post what I had for lunch, when I filled my gas tank, and what my dog is doing right now... I'm sorry.

Site News: Browser and OS visitor stats

Just for giggles, I took a look at The Graphic Mac's site statistics, including what Web browser was used the most, and on what OS platform. While there were no surprises, I did notice some rather interesting percentages.

This is a Mac focused site, but roughly 28% of visitors here are using a Windows-based computer. I forgive those users though, because nearly 16% of those users are cool enough to use Firefox or some other non-I.E. browser. The other 12% need to get with the program and switch to the uber-awesome Firefox!

Also of note is the fact that Google Chrome has been out for only about a week and it's already popping up in browser stats. I attribute that to a lot of people testing it out. I wonder how many of those users are running Chrome on a Mac using VMWare Fusion or Parallels Desktop.

Welcome Markzware

I just wanted to post a quick note to introduce you to The Graphic Mac's newest Partner, Markzware.

You may have read a previous post regarding one of their products (Q2ID), which converts Quark documents to InDesign, a while back. I'm a huge fan of this valuable plugin for Adobe InDesign. The time you can save more than pays for the plugin after a single use.

Check out Markzware's other offerings for Quark and InDesign when you visit their site, they may just have what you're looking for!

Site Updates

Feature Additions:
You may have already noticed, but in case you haven’t I thought I would mention that I’ve added a few features to The Graphic Mac recently.

Due to several requests from you guys, I’ve added an “Email This Page” link to the bottom of each individual post page. Clicking it will open a page right in your browser allowing you to choose the From and To email address, and add a custom message to an automatically generated link to the page you want to send.

Along the same line, if you just want to let someone else know about this site, you can click the Send an e-Postcard link located in the left sidebar navigation area. This will open a similar looking page allowing you to add a personal message to an already pre-set message and image indicating to the recipient that you like this site, and want them to know about it.

While neither of these things are ground-breaking, I just thought you would like to know that I do listen and try to add features you request. If you would like to see something added to the site, please use either the Contact form or leave a message in the Discussion Forums, and I’ll try to implement it if I can.

Web Links:
I’ve been adding links to a lot of sites lately, you can see the latest in the right sidebar just below the RSS Subscribe section. Be sure to check them out. And please, if you find anything interesting or useful, add a link. You must be registered to add links, but it’s quick and painless.

Improvements on the way:
I know that the comments area is kind of a mess. The subject, username, date & time info and the Reply links are kind of jumbled together. I also know that the user avatars interfere with full-width images, creating a rather large separation between the headline and the start of an article on individual post pages. I am working on it. Unfortunately, I’m not a CSS guru, so it’s taking more time than I would like to fix.

The last time I had a CSS issue, reader Derek helped me out in the comments of this particular article. Kudos to Derek, I can’t thank you enough!
