Personally, I find the Apple Magic Mouse and Trackpad not very good for precision mousing. And the Kensington trackball (while great at page scrolling), just isn’t meant for that sort of thing.

In Edit>Keyboard Shortcuts there are under the Tools button, ready shortcuts for Transparency for 0% to 100%. Just add numbers to the shortcuts, like 1 for 10%, 2 for 20% and so on, 0 for 100%. If you like you could also add Shift+0 for 0% (not much point though).

When this is done you can simply hit the 5 to get 50% and so on. This is very fast and in less than a second you can try two to three different transparency values. Then if you need something in between fine tune with the shortcuts mentioned.
