Logo design trends for 2008

Logo Trends

Logos are the ultimate mark of distinction and everyone loves them. We see logos everyday - on the highways, on consumer goods, on the Web and in the institutions and organizations we support.

Every year somebody puts out a forcast of what we can expect from logo design in the coming year. This year, LogoOrange has a 2008 Logo Design Trends report covering the "in" styles for this year.

Popular styles for this year include:

  • 3D
  • Waves
  • Web 2.0-style
  • Transparency
  • "Underground"
  • Rainbows
  • Sci-Fi
  • Leaves
  • Ugly 80's
  • Crests

While I'm happy to see some of these styles appear on the scene, I could do without some of them like Web 2.0 and 80's style.

Should we follow trend?

Interesting article, although I found myself asking the question, should logo's follow trends? I've always believed a logo should be a statement about the organisation first and foremost and try not to follow whatever is in the zeitgeist at the time.

Consideration should always be made for logo's to work across varied medium and I'd question some of the examples suitability away from 4 colour print and online placement.

Enjoy your site very much by the way!

I think it's subjective

While the old rules still apply, we still have to accept that many companies truly are "online" and don't exist outside of that realm (beyond a business card anyway) - so gradients, transparency and drop shadows will technically "work." That's not to say that they should be used for no good reason, just that they CAN work.

As "blankman" stated below, we all get inspiration from other places - but it's up to us as designers to "interpret" those inspirations in our own work.

Agreed

But I think that designers draw inspiration from other designers, so we're going to see (for lack of a better word) copycats everywhere. If something looks good, you're probably going to use it as a major inspiration.

One Thing

I read these trends (with some traduction) and I percept that actualy logo design can agree shadows, glow effects and collorful fills (with good usage). Some trends combines techniques that many designers disagree. But the new print ways and the digital-media expansion can contribute with these trends.

The trend of finding trends

It seems that there's a trend to find logo design trends for every year. Usually it was a prerogative of LogoLounge:

I hope they wouldn't miss this year; It would be interesting to compare two points of view.
