Apple updates iCloud Drive pricing/storage options

Apple has updated the storage options and pricing for their iCloud Drive service. It’s a lot more reasonable now, though still not competitive in the market on pricing alone. Fortunately, iCloud Drive will have the benefit of working seamlessly with all your Apple devices. No other vendor will be able to offer the accessibility that Apple will with iCloud, and that (in my mind) justifies a little more in cost.

Quick Look is more than just image previews

The Quick Look feature in Mac OS X Lion is useful for previewing images, text files and websites. But you can also use it to quickly check the free space remaining on your hard drive.

Simply click on the Mac HD icon on the Desktop or in a Finder window and hit the spacebar.

Another quick way to check your free space is to turn on the Status Bar in Finder windows by visiting View>Show Status Bar (Command + /) and click on the Mac HD icon in the Finder window. The Status Bar at the bottom of the Finder window will display your free space.

How does 50GB of free storage sound?

It sounds awesome to me. I was skeptical when I heard Box was giving away free accounts with 50GB of storage. Yeah, not megabytes, GIGABYTES. But it’s true.

The only catch is that you have to sign up for the Box.net service through the iOS app to get it (though existing users apparently get it the next time they sign-in to their account as well).

Box has been around a long time, much longer than Dropbox – the most popular online storage service going. Normally, 50GB of Box.net storage would cost you $20 per month, with the free plan only offering 5GB. Box also has one huge advantage over most similar services in that it allows multiple users to collaborate on file(s) at the same time.

If iCloud's free 5GB of iWork storage isn't enough, Box is your best bet

There is no free lunch.

Unlike Dropbox, there is no menubar icon for easy access. Also unlike Dropbox and Apple’s newly-released iCloud, Box doesn’t offer sync capability in their free accounts. To take advantage of your newly-acquired free storage, you’ll have to access it via your iOS app or the web-based interface. The individual file size limit has been lifted from 25MB to 100MB for this promotion, but it still prevents you from using Box for larger video file backup. Sharing files is easy no matter which option you choose.

However, since iCloud storage is currently useless for anyone that doesn’t use iWork, and most people probably have few individual files larger than 100MB to share, Box is an attractive option that’s difficult to pass-up on.

There is a free snack, though.

If you plan on using Box heavily, you can avoid the browser interface by mounting your Box account just like you would any external server.

Simply visit the Finder menubar: Go>Connect to Server… (or just hit Command + K)
Type https://www.box.net/dav (note the https) in the address box
Type the email address your signed up with in the Username box and your password in the Password box
That’s it!

Your storage bin will mount on the desktop like an external hard drive and you can drag and drop files to and from the server. In order to send a link to the files though, you’ll have to use the browser interface or the iOS app – a relatively minor annoyance, but one nonetheless.

20 great free online file storage services

Please Digg this if you find it useful. A few years ago, I posted a long list of free online file sharing services. If you haven’t used a sharing service to transport large files from one computer/location to another, you’re missing out. It’s a whole lot cheaper, and most times, faster than burning CDs or lugging around an external hard drive. It’s also a little more secure than just tossing your document onto a “who knows how reliable” USB keydrive. Rather than post an exhaustive list of services, I decided this time to focus on 20 of the better services I’ve come across. I have tried every one on this list and found the experience satisfactory to excellent. As for me, I prefer two of these. MediaFire is fast and reliable. With its rather low 100MB file size limit, you might be turned off. But the simple site layout, speed and reliability, make MediaFire a gem. They make it as simple as it can possibly get to share your files. I also like the fact that they’ve been around for a long time. For files that are larger than 100MB (and that I don’t want to bother splitting up), I use File Dropper. It’s another simple to use site that I’ve had great luck with. Though the speed isn’t quite as good as MediaFire, it’s still better than most I’ve tried. And the large file size limit makes it perfect for transferring large video files when a DVD burner isn’t available. Keep in mind that the File Size Limit listed for each service is NOT the total storage space allotted, it’s just the limit of each individual file you can upload. Most services offer anywhere between 2GB to unlimited. Also keep in mind that free online storage services rely on advertising to pay the bills. When the ad clicks dry up, the service goes away. Many of these sites, such as MediaFire, have been in business for a long time. But many of the sites on my original list didn’t last long. The moral of the story, don’t rely on these “free” sites for important backups. They’re for temporary storage and transfer use only. Free online file storage and file sending

A while back, I posted an article about YouSendIt, a free e-mail-based file sending service. If you’ve ever had to send large files and don’t have access to FTP, or the person you’re sending to doesn’t, this type of service is a fantastic resource. Today, I have a list of 50 similar services that are absolutely free and require no e-mail registration to use. Included in the list are file size limits, download limits and the amount of time the file remains on the server for download. Some of these services will no doubt have updated or changed their services.
