Swatch: The next company to be destroyed by Apple

Swatch watches

Swatch Group AG said it’s developing an alternative to Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems for smartwatches as Switzerland’s largest maker of timepieces vies with Silicon Valley for control of consumers’ wrists.

Mark your calendars folks. By “sometime around the end of 2018,” a company that doesn’t know dick about making an OS platform that is secure, feature-packed, or useful—and is famous for the watches seen above—is going to put-out a great smartwatch to compete with Apple Watch. Pffftt!

The road is littered with the steaming, smelly carcasses of companies that thought they could even produce a smartwatch, let alone one that competes with Apple. Even the mighty Samsung couldn’t do it, and stuck with Android… which despite popular belief is a virtual non-starter as far as competition with Apple is concerned.

Swatch says their building an alternative to iOS & Android. I simply say: Muahahahahaaaa! If I had to guess, I would say that Swatch will eventually release a really nice looking Pebble watch in 2019, with the promise of making it better… only to kill it off 6 months later after a complete lack of sales.

Is the Apple Watch a stalled platform?

I reply to a large portion of text messages from the watch, using customized quick responses. Tracking my exercise has helped me lose 10 pounds. But that’s about it. And they are pretty much the same ways I used the watch when I first got it.

The platform simply feels stalled.

I recall a lot of journalists claiming the same thing about the Apple TV years ago. The Apple Watch is going to take some time to become a mainstream device that everyone wants or has. Right now, it doesn’t offer anything new, it just offers another way to see what you already can on your phone. It’s going to take time to train people to leave their phone in their pockets and use the watch instead—and even longer to make that a habit that users don’t want to be without.

The better Apple Watch

GoldenDreams Apple Watch

The Swiss know watches. And Golden Dreams knows how to make the Apple Watch Edition better looking than Apple does. Open the full size image above in a new window to get a closer look at the beauty! And did I mention it costs less, too?

You can order the 42mm Apple Watch (pictured above) in 24ct yellow gold, beautifully hand-engraved in Geneva, with a lucious black alligator (ostrich, shark, and a few other choice skins are also available) band for the cool price of around $9,900 U.S. That’s around a $6,000 savings off a comparable model bought directly for Apple—except you can’t get hand engraved designs or 24ct gold directly from Apple.

If all you want is a nice alligator skin band, you can save a few bucks and only pay around $700 U.S. Blue ostrich skin is even less.

Golden Dreams iPhone

Don’t even get me started on what Golden Dreams can do with an iPhone… They don’t list a price for the “Masterpiece” collections, so I can only assume it’s out of my spare-change-range.

And since you surely would want to carry one of these iPhone’s in a case, you can grab a Python skin case for a mere $800-ish.

I’m all Apple Watch(ed) out…

I'm all Apple Watch(ed) out...

All the hullabaloo over the Apple Watch has absolutely worn me out the last few days. Of all the products Apple has ever released, the Apple Watch is the one product I believe is worth waiting for the next version. Too many unanswered questions!

Apple Watch pricing

Apple Watch pricing

I expect the Apple Watch stainless steel with links band will cost substantially more than what most consumers think or expect from Apple. But I also think Apple has a trick up its sleeve for Apple Watch pricing.

We’ll know in a few hours.
