InDesign problems with Leopard

Tim Cole authors one of the many Adobe Blogs available called Tim Cole's InDesign BackChannel.

The entire blog is fantastic, but two posts caught my eye recently regarding InDesign CS3 and Leopard.

The first post sheds light on 3 issues:

1. You can't "hide" InDesign under Leoard
2. There's a problem copying vector objects FROM InDesign TO Illustrator
3. Crashes when invoking dialog boxes for save, open, export, etc.

While no solutions are offered, Tim does let us know that Adobe is aware of the problem, and is working with Apple to resolve the issue.

The second post dives a little deeper into problem #3.

For the record, I also experience the inability to hide InDesign. You simply can't do it, except under certain circumstances which I can't nail down. But even then, once hidden I can't get it to unhide, and must force quit it.

I don't experience any crashes with dialog boxes, but I use DefaultFolder and I wonder if that somehow is a "workaround" for the issue.

no more hide

with Tiger i use command-H so many times. it was very usefoul. now with Spaces there are no need to HIDE anything: just group/combine right application to each appropriate space... that's all

Yup, no hiding in Tiger

Command H does nothing, and neither does selecting the menu item right in the program - your only option (since there's no 'Spaces' in 10.4) is to minimize any open files to the dock and just move on to whatever else you're doing...

Work With Pete!

I also cannot hide ID, but I

I also cannot hide ID, but I have not had the crashing issue at all. I think it might stem from your install method of Leopard. If you did a clean install you may have better luck with CS3 rather than the upgrade or archive and install.

Great new site though!

Updating Suitcase solved issue #3 for me

Hello dudes & dudettes!

I had the same problem with Indy shortly after upgrading to Leopard. I found that on another Mac this didn't happen, although the configuration was essentially the same.

Pretty soon I tracked the issue down to fonts and hence cast a suspecting eye to Suitcase. This is what I did:

1) Force Quit Suitcase & InDesign
2) Trashed Indy's prefs (just force quit three times in a row nad OS X will ask whether to trash them).
3) Let Suitcase start and rebuild itself
4) Started InDesign and the problem was gone

The issue returned once, but little later on Extensis updated Suitcase and it hasn't returned since.

Best regards,

Tommi

Great fix! Thnx!

InDesign

That's all well and good, but what if I'm not using Suitcase. I use LinoType Font Explorer X and have the same problems with InDesign.

I'll go to open an InDesign document and it doesn't show up on the screen, however if I go to the dock and mouse over InDesign it says that it's open and shows the document in the list of open items. I am using InDesign CS3.

Update Suitcase?

Do you mean you rebuilt the prefs file, or upgraded to a newer version of Suitcase? Rebuilding the prefs will certainly fix problems temporarily (it appears to in your case), but long-term the problem is still there.

What version of Suitcase are you running?

Suitcase update

The problem returned after a while, but after the latest Suitcase update (12.1.7) it has stayed absent.

I might be paranoid, but repeating crashes with DTP apps are very often font related. And while font management apps for Mac are superior to their Windows counterparts, they still aren't perfect. : (

Agreed.

We're going on what, 7 years now of OSX? You would think they would have gotten control of the situation by now.

I do know that Extensis is releasing a new "type server" application at Macworld next week. Perhaps they'll have a new client version as well.

Workaround to getting access to InDesign once hid

Hi
I had the same problem with hiding InDesign. Also, sometimes if I did manage to hide it I would be unable to access the application again and would have to force quite.
I noticed that I only had this problem if my font management software (Fontexplorer in my case) was also hid (as is the default). With Fontexplorer visible I was again able to access Indesign (but still not hide) -weird

Here at our company, We have

Here at our company,

We have 3 people wich have the same problems in Indesign but seems no one else has them. They all use Suitcase (not the latest) and Indesign (CS3).
The problem is that when they enter some number to move the text box that it goes back to it's original value. Same with Find and replace. copy some text paste it in and suddently he doesn't change the word but put it right next to it.

I have tried with repairing the Indesign. Didn't help
Tried at one computer with a complete new Indesign installation. nothing better.
they all have Leopard 10.5.6, yes they had it also with 10.5.5.

Ps: Here we don't have the problems mentioned above...

Anybody an idea?
Thx!!

Downsaving CS4 files to CS3

I've just received a file downsaved from CS4 to CS3 and have problems with fonts appearing to reflow, also when it opened there was a message about assignments.
Can anybody shed any light.
